In November 2008 I posted some ideas about how to promote an Etsy shop online and had great feedback from the Etsy community, which has encouraged me to continue with a second part of my series “How to promote an Etsy shop online”.

In my previous post I really concentrated on Facebook, Twitter and other social media tools. But social media isn’t everything. The next few paragraphs will show you the other side of getting your Etsy shop known.

  • A simple email

Write an email explaining about your new venture and include a link to your Etsy shop. Send the email to all your friends and the rest of your contacts. This should already add up to a decent amount of people. Ask these friends to pass on your link to their contacts.

Especially do this again a few weeks before bigger events, such as Mothers’ Day, Valentine’s Day, Christmas or Easter. Remember those are dates where everyone (especially males) are looking for presents desperately and people are more likely to spend their money then on your lovely item, rather than in a highstreet store.

  • Create a blog

A great example for such a Etsy blog is Akane Designs, which I think is a really lovely blog and really well executed. If you visit the site you can see this lady has put in a lot of hours creating and maintaining this blog. The blog has also a large group of followers. You can create a blog for free either at Blogger or Wordpress. With blogger you can start blogging after 3 steps:

  1. Create an account
  2. Name your blog
  3. Choose a template

With Wordpress you are only required to fill out 1 form and you’re ready to blog. Note that with Wordpress you can also host the blog yourself with a domain name of your choice but this will require for you to purchase a domain name and webspace and may not be very straight-forward for anyone who is not too internet savvy.

Then start blogging about new items you’ve created, post pictures and link back to your Etsy shop. Tell all your friends about the blog and also share the new blog posts on your personal Facebook page but also on your company Facebook page and Twitter.

I would like to see some more examples of Etsy sellers’ blogs. Leave a comment with your link on this post!

After almost 3 months of juggling 2 jobs (or more like 1 1/2), I have finally handed over my responsibilities, as SEO Manager at Dog Digital to Richard Shove, a talented, like-minded SEO. I´m glad that I could pass my clients confidently over, not something I´ve always achieved in the past. SEOs can be very protective over their clients, as over the course of a project strong relationships are built.

I´m quite sad, it´s almost an end of an era, however, I just need to look out of the window where even in October the sun still shines. Yep, Barcelona has it´s benefits for sure! So whilst trying to get my head round the Spanish language, I will have enough time to finally get this blog prospering and Barcelona will hopefully give me the inspiration I need!

Thanks to everyone who has been given me a lot of encouragement over the past 2 months. It´s good to know that there are actually some people follow my views and thoughts on SEO and online marketing.

After numerous months of being very quiet, I’ve decided it’s time to get back into the swing of things and get blogging. Especially one of my former workmates, Kilian Valkhof, Front end develeloper and User experience designer, pointed out that back in Holland he doesn’t link back to people who don’t blog! And that is a fair point indeed!

One reason for my absence is that I’ve had a busy few months. I’ve had big changes in my life, such as moving to Barcelona in Spain for good, which unfortunately meant that I had to leave Dog Digital, still the best agency I’ve worked at yet. Well, I said leave but at the moment I’m juggling two jobs, still working for Dog on a part-time basis from the Barcelona satellite office :P and also in my new job at Properazzi, the international property search engine.

To be honest I was very hesitant going back onto the client side, especially after interviewing many people from the “dark side”, who supposedly call themselves “SEO specialists” and present a very poor grasp of SEO. Although, I can’t generalise there, as one of my new colleagues, James Omdahl aka the Marketingpunk, who is based in Denver, is one of the most knowledgable SEOs I’ve met in a long time.

Anyway, this is the start of a new beginning. Only another month of two jobs and I will be able to dedicate many more hours to beautiful SEO chat!

Hasta luego!
